What is mini-tennis?

As with most sports it’s best to start young, so the LTA have developed a programme for

kids aged between 4 and 10 years that takes into account that the tennis racket and full sized tennis court are too big and that the balls bounce too high and fast for small kids. They’ve called the programme Mini Tennis.

Mini-Tennis Red – Ages 4 – 8 Years is the first stage and is very important for building skills and confidence. The emphasis is on fundamental sporting skills such as movement and co-ordination…. and above all else fun! As children progress through Mini Tennis Red they will be introduced to rallying and playing the game leading to fun competitions.

At Riverside we divide our mini-red sessions into three different levels. Level 1 is for beginners, Level 2 is for those who can rally in a service box with a red ball and Level 3 is for those ready to play mini-red matches.

Mini-Tennis Orange Ages 8 – 9 Years introduces children to playing on a 3/4 length tennis court. The low bounce Mini Tennis Orange ball slows the game down to a speed that gives players time to play good basic tennis shots and enables them to have maximum fun playing the game! The emphasis continues to be on developing fundamental sporting skills as well as hitting shots just lie their favourite stars.

Mini-Tennis Green Ages 9 – 10 Years is the final stage before children move to tennis. Played on a full size court, the green ball is slightly lower bouncing than a normal tennis ball and helps the children to use good technique and rally consistently.

Come along to our mini-tennis coaching sessions. The courses are 11 weeks long and will begin in the week beginning Monday 24 April; proportionate prices are available if you join in the middle of a course!  Details of times & prices can be found below.
