FINALS DAY 2003
First of all a big thank-you to everyone who turned up to support the finalists on what turned out to be a pretty chilly Sunday!|
Congratulations to Keith Richardson and Liezl Cuff who both retained their singles titles. In a repeat of last year's men's final, Nick won an exciting first set on a tie-break before Keith managed to win the second and third sets in a very long match full of good rallies.
The ladies' singles featured the first appearance in a Riverside final of sixteen year old Bronwen Derry. Bronwen put up a very good fight against the defending champion, Liezl before losing it 6-4, 6-2.
The scheduled mixed drawn final of John Marsden and Barbara Bruce against John Barrett and Carolyn Barry unfortunately did not take place as John M had injured his leg playing football resulting in an unsatisfactory walk-over for John and Carolyn.
After the singles, we all tucked into an excellent lunch, including fantastic steak burgers cooked by Adrian, beautiful salads and creamy puddings all produced by members and co-ordinated by Rosemary.

The men's doubles was another repeat of last year, with Nick and Graham taking on Guy and Keith. Despite the advent of signing, Guy and Keith still didn't manage to defeat the defending champions - maybe more instruction is required?
The ladies doubles final produced a good match with Liezl and Kay beating Claire and Carolyn in three sets.
Jean and Bernard won the veterans mixed doubles with a good two set victory over Dennis and Freda, reversing last year's result. No picture I'm afraid - was the photographer tucking in to tea at the time?!!
Meanwhile the plate final produced the closest match of the day, with Glen just pipping Simon 7-6 in the final set.
The final match of the day was the mixed doubles, which was also a repeat of last year with Keith and Kay defeating Nick and Carolyn in two sets.
Thank you to John Barrett, Mike Bath and Claire McDonald who organised the tournament, to Rosemary and Philippa for arranging the food and to Adrian for cooking his superb steak-burgers. Thank you also to the LTA umpires and lines-people who helped to make the day special!
