FINALS DAY 2004|
Our "Indian Summer" brought one of the hottest finals' day for years. This was lovely for all the spectators but not so great for the players! Here are Liezl & John's attempts to keep cool!
It was great to see so many spectators again this year. Here are a few snaps of people enjoying the action!
Congratulations to all the singles players who had to struggle with the heat and their opponents' skills! After a tough two sets, Keith retained his men's title beating Nick for the third year running whilst Gill beat Liezl in an exciting three set match. The Men's Plate was played later in the day when it was much cooler (Orestes' claiming work committments!) and resulted in a victory for Orestes over Glen.
The mixed veterans match between Mandy & Bryan and Philippa and James was also played at the hottest time of the day and an exhausting, three-set battle resulted in a win for Bryan and Mandy.
As usual, our lunch was excellent with lovely salads and delicious puddings. Here's our Chairman eagerly tucking-in and one of our youngest members clearing away afterwards!
The afternoon's entertainment began with the Mens Doubles, Ladies' Veterans Doubles and Ladies' Doubles Finals.
The men's doubles produced a fifth straight win for Nick & Graham, this time with a two set win over John M & Matt.
The inaugral Ladies Veterans final was also an enjoyable match with many good rallies eventually resulting in Jean & Freda beating Tricia & Philippa.
Unfortunately the photographer was off-duty at this stage - collecting Jamie from a party - so there are no photos of either match I'm afraid!
The Ladies' Doubles also featured a fifth win in a row (I think?) for reigning champions Liezl & Kay, this time with a close, two set win over Bronwen (playing well in her first ever Club Doubles' Final) and Carolyn.
After tea, it was time for the third round of matches.
The inaugral Veterans Men's Doubles event produced another three set match with Orestes & John Barrett eventually defeating James & Graham.
The mixed doubles was a repeat of the last two years' finals with Kay & Keith taking on Nick & Carolyn. This year however the result was reversed with Nick & Carolyn winning in an exciting, three set match.
Sadly, the mixed drawn final could not be played due to illness meaning that Steve & Freda received a walk-over over Nigel & Gill.
Thank you very much to John Barrett, Mike Bath and Tricia More for organising the tournament, to the Umpires who added a touch of class to the occasion & to Rosemary & Philippa for organising the food.
