FINALS DAY 2005
Yet another hot and humid morning greeted us for Finals Day 2005. With the club's facilities' development in full swing i.e. a fantastic new club house (but with no roof yet), the old club house starting its new life at Wyvern College & our smart new shed, a couple of gazebos & a portaloo acting as our current "facilities", this weather came as somewhat a relief for the organisers!!
In the traditional Riverside manner we all adapted admirably, brought great picnics & enjoyed the sunshine & tennis.
The matches kicked off at 11am with the Mens Singles, Ladies Singles and the Mixed Drawn finals. The Men's final was contested between our current champion, Keith, & Matt who was making his debut in a Riverside singles final. Despite the heat, the crowd were treated to some excellent rallies before Keith finally won through 6-3, 6-2. The Ladies final was a repeat of last year's billing with Gilly bidding to retain her title over Liezl. As expected, this was a very entertaining match with some lovely stroke play, eventually won again by Gilly 6-3, 6-3. The mixed drawn was, as is becoming traditional, retained by Freda, this year playing with Guy and defeating Glen & Carolyn 6-4, 6-3.
Next it was time for the official "Opening of Court 6". Our chairman and project manager for the new court, Steve, partnered by Philippa (our Treasurer) played a highly skewed "fun" tie-break in which they just managed the required victory against Guy (our Vice-Chairman) and Liz (our Ladies Captain). The entertaining match included playing with their partners' racket(funnily enough Philippa and Steve play with the same make)and playing points whilst carrying water bottles (guess who had to carry the largest ones?)
Next, to decorate our new club house & record a great year for the club, we took photos of all our teams in what must have been one of the most successful seasons for the club ever!
Ladies A Team who are 2005 champions of Hants & IOW Leauge.
Mens Over 45s who earned promotion to Division 2
The afternoon's entertainment began with the Mixed Doubles, Ladies' Veterans Doubles and Mens Veteran Doubles. The Ladies Veterans final was the longest match of the day (a marathon 2 hours and 35 minutes!) which eventually led to a victory for Jean & Freda over Philippa & Tricia 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
In the men's veterans doubles, Graham & James staged a recovery after losing the first set 6-1 but were pipped 7-6 by John B & Orestes in the second.
Graham & Gilly treated us to a great display of clever net-play (unless you were at the other side of the net!) in their 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Nick & Carolyn to win the mixed doubles title.
Well before the Veteran's Ladies doubles finished, the Mens and Ladies Doubles started! The Mens Doubles was a great game that finally saw the defeat of five time champions, Graham & Nick, by Matt and John in two closely fought sets, 7-6, 7-5. Meanwhile the Ladies Doubles also turned out to be a very long, close match (2 hours 20 minutes, so not quite as much stamina as the vets!) and finally led to a 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 win for Gilly and Carolyn over Kay & Liezl leaving Gilly exhausted but winner of the Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles & Mixed Competitions! The final match of the day was the Vets Doubles - a good match in which Graham and Tricia emerged victorious over Bernard and Jean, 6-1, 6-4.
Thank you very much to Guy Holden, John Barrett, Mike Bath and Tricia More for organising another successful tournament.
